Join us in marking National Lyme Disease Awareness Month at this free info session and documentary screening. The info session will be led by Ottawa Naturopath, Dr. Marie Matheson ND, following a screening of the documentary, “Ticked Off: The Mystery of Lyme Disease”.
Some Myths & Facts about Lyme Disease:
Myth: Lyme disease is a rare disease.
Fact: Lyme disease is the fastest growing epidemic in North America. It is transmitted by several species of ticks that become infected by feeding on the blood of infected rodents, birds, and deer.
Myth: Ticks are only found in rural areas.
Fact: While more plentiful in rural areas, ticks can travel anywhere their hosts travel. A tick that has latched onto a bird can travel into urban centres, unlatch from its host, and go on to bite a human.
Myth: There’s no Lyme disease in Canada.
Fact: Lyme disease has been found in all 10 Canadian provinces. If you are a dog-owner in Canada, your vet will recommend you vaccinate your dog against Lyme disease. If your dog can get Lyme disease – so can you
