Nic approaches yoga through slow, purposeful movement, adapting classes to individual needs of students, from beginner to advanced. Yoga that has provided Nic with an understanding of underlying causes issues in his life, notably depression, giving him the ability to live a healthy and active life. Though struggles are inevitable to avoid, through the use of breathing, meditation and a regular asana practice it has allowed him to step out of isolation and connect to a community of like minded individuals. It is Nic’s goal to share these techniques and help others who may be facing similar struggles in their own lives.
It was in University while completing a B.A. of Religion at Carleton University that Nic was introduced to Eastern philosophy. Most people are introduced to yoga by attending their first physical class., for Nic it was the compilation of Patanjali, the epic Bhagavad Gita, and the concepts of non duality that drew his attention and began this life of learning. It was only a matter of time, and a lot of loving encouragement from his yogi mother, before he went to his first yoga class.
There wasn’t a singular moment when Nic knew that this was the path he should embark on. Each class brought on new challenges, and forced him to connect to the body he had spent so many years judging ruthlessly. There were days he pushed too hard, injuring himself which led to wallowing in anger and self pity. Then there were days of progress. Slowly but surely Nic began to connect to the practice, to feel the breath as it traveled his body, and those negative thoughts became a little quieter and confidence grew. While on sick leave from work due to stress and depression, Nic decided that he would take a leap of faith and signed up to become a certified yoga instructor.
After successfully completing his training he has continued to direct energy into the continued development of his teaching style. Leading hatha, yin, restorative, meditation and gong classes, Nic strives to keep classes fresh and challenging for students with encouraging moments to pause and connect with the sensations of your practice. Nic continues to research new methods of movement and muscle activation and plans to continue his education to obtain additional certifications in the future. For now Nic’s warm and welcoming personality and life experience provide an open and inclusive space for anyone wishing to explore the yoga tradition!
