Mike is very grateful for the opportunity to share his love for yoga, as both a vigorous physical workout and a means of cultivating inner peace and mental focus. His introduction to yoga came 10 years ago, inspired by his older siblings and the positive vibes of the enlightened yogis he met. His first class was at Rama Lotus, where he later took the 200 hour Hatha Yoga teacher training course.
Today, his focus is primarily on Ashtanga in its traditional form, a challenging yet meditative practice. Each day, he is fascinated by the effectiveness of this system in its original form, which has remained relatively unchanged over the last 50 years. Mike trained with the living legend David Swenson, and on his own time continues to study the approach to instructing this ancient art espoused by others like Mark Darby and Sharath.
Mike's classes are deeply rooted in Ashtanga, offering a flowing practice designed for advanced students and beginners alike, with modifications to challenge all levels of flexibility and strength. "Practice without attachment to the outcomes" is a mantra that serves him well— especially on those stiff days—and this attitude of challenging oneself while staying out of the ego best characterizes the atmosphere in his classes.
Mike is continuously inspired by internationally renowned yogis, and by many friends and teachers in the local yoga scene. Philosophically, he is inspired by the practicality of Zen Buddhism and Taoism, and the savouring the experience of stillness that can strike at any time during a yoga session.
