The Yoga of Dying

Yoga is rich with wisdom for living well, but can it teach us about dying well? In fact, there are profound teachings about death nested in each of the eight limbs of yoga, as described by the sage Patanjali. From aparigraha (non-attachment) to savasana (corpse pose), from khumbhaka (breath retention) to abhinivesha (the pain that results from clinging to life), yoga offers encouragement to contemplate one’s own death as a lifelong spiritual practice.
