Bikram Yoga at Rama Lotus Yoga Centre since 1999

Bikram Yoga came to Ottawa in 1999 when Luc Sauvé, a Corporal in the RCMP, and one of the first Canadians trained under Bikram and Rajashree Choudhury, began teaching at Rama Lotus Yoga Centre. We were the first yoga studio in Ottawa to offer Bikram Yoga and every effort was made to create the right conditions, by adding full-length mirrors and a dedicated furnace to make sure the heat was at 105 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius), as required for this style of yoga.

Inspired by Luc’s example, other dedicated Bikram Yoga students attended the Bikram Yoga Teacher Training program and became fully certified under Bikram and Rajashree Choudhury. Ed Hum traveled to Los Angeles in 2001 to receive his certification, and he has been teaching Bikram at Rama Lotus ever since! Karoline Eder was certified in 2002, Martina Elliott in 2005. Our Bikram team recently expanding when Naomi Simon, Dominique Corbin, and Samantha Guimond joined our team.    Today, we offer 16 Bikram Yoga classes each week, by a team that has a combined 35 years of teaching experience.

In addition, our teachers have all received additional training in such modalities such as Hatha Yoga, Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy, and Muscle Activation Techniques ™. These disciplines have broadened their understanding of yoga and the human body, allowing them to offer even more to their students.

The class can be called by its many names: Bikram’s Beginning Yoga Class, Bikram Yoga, Bikram Hot Method, or Bikram Hot Yoga, but the formula will always be the same: 90 minutes, 26 postures, two breathing exercises, everything done twice, in a Hot Room with full-length mirrors. This class will cleanse the body, stimulate all the systems in the body, promote weight loss, improve concentration, patience, and mental clarity, and will help to reduce stress.

A class similar to Bikram Yoga, called Hot Series, was introduced in 2014 when our students were eager to advance to another level. This class is a series of postures based on the original 84 Hatha Yoga postures taught by Bikram’s guru, Bishnu Gosh, and arranged by Tony Sanchez, one of Bikram’s very first students.

We are proud of the history of Bikram Yoga at Rama Lotus Yoga Centre, and that that we can continue to offer you this powerful style of yoga!
